Pathways into and between VET qualifications
Pathways between VET and higher education qualifications
Pathways into and between VET qualifications
Pathways into VET qualifications may include a range of options such as:
- work-based training and assessment
- institution based education and training and assessment
- part institution based education, training and assessment, part work based training and assessment
- recognition of prior learning
- recognition of prior learning combined with further training as required
VET qualifications may include components of programs that include more than one qualification. For example a Certificate IV could be part of a program that includes both a Certifciate IV and a Diploma qualification. A student may complete the requirements for a Certifciate IV only or may go on and gain a Diploma as well.
Pathways between VET and higher education qualifications
Partnerships, or articulation arrangements, between many registered vocational education and training providers and universities have been formed to enhance the pathways from an industry qualification to a university qualification. These partnerships are increasing in number. They ensure that the maximum amount of credit is given to avoid repetitive and inefficient education and training.
The AQF Council is committed to ensuring that opportunities are provided to all students to be able to follow relevant educational pathways to employment and/or further study as required.
In May 2009, the AQF Council completed a draft National Policy and Guidelines on Credit Arrangements. This policy will be further refined as a result of the outcomes of its 2009 Pathways Project.
Case studies and examples of pathways
A range of case studies and examples of articulation pathways were included in the PhillipsKPA National Study to Impove Outcomes in Credit Transfer and Articulation fom Vocational and Technical Education to Higher Education, April 2006. Further examples may be included here as a result of the current AQF Council Pathways Project.
