Pathways into and between higher education qualifications

Students on entry to a Bachelor Degree typically hold the Senior Secondary Certifiate of Education, including mature age or other special provisions for entry or bridging or foundation programs. Students may also enter from a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree or from another undergraduate program.

Pathways to other higher education qualifications are typically based on evidence of a capacity to undertake higher degree studies with entry pathways that may vary according to the program methodology and the discipline involved.

Pathways between VET and higher education qualifications

Partnerships, or articulation arrangements, between many registered vocational education and training providers and universities have been formed to enhance the pathways from an industry qualification to a university qualification. These partnerships are increasing in number and may involve all directions: VET to higher education and higher education to VET. They ensure that the maximum amount of credit is given to avoid repetitive and inefficient education and training.

The AQF Council is committed to ensuring that opportunities are provided to all students to be able to follow relevant educational pathways to employment and/or further study as required.

In May 2009, the AQF Council completed a draft National Policy and Guidelines on Credit Arrangements. This policy will be further refined as a result of the outcomes of its 2009 Pathways Project.

Case studies and examples of pathways

A range of case studies and examples of articulation pathways were included in the PhillipsKPA National Study to Impove Outcomes in Credit Transfer and Articulation fom Vocational and Technical Education to Higher Education, April 2006. Further examples may be included here as a result of the current AQF Council Pathways Project.
